Clean girl makeup or no-makeup makeup is all over the Internet right now! I’ve seen so many tutorials about clean girl aesthetic makeup on Tik Tok, Youtube and Pinterest. Clean girl makeup is all about enhancing your features and the less is more approach, which I love.
In my opinion, I like this clean girl makeup (or natural makeup) trend better than the 2016 full glam makeup trend that has taken over the Internet ever since it went viral. But as always, everyone needs to do what’s best for them, their style and their lifestyle.
In today’s post, I will show you how to create this viral clean girl makeup look that I have gotten lots of requests on Pinterest to recreate. A lot of you requested I create a guide on how to recreate this look of @alissajanay pictured below.
Clean Girl Makeup Also Known As No-Makeup Makeup is Back and I am Living For It
I am loving this trend because it is perfect for everyone. Clean girl makeup essentially means a makeup look that is natural and looks like you aren’t wearing any makeup. It is makeup that enhances your features and just makes you look put together and “clean”. It is an elegant makeup look that just enhances your features instead of covering them up.
Clean girl makeup is a natural makeup no-makeup makeup look which is convenient and more realistic for everyday life. Glam makeup, which has been the trend since 2016, is beautiful but for most of us, it’s not practical for every day. Finally, there is a makeup trend we can use in our everyday life and I am loving it!
I think it’s good when different makeup techniques and makeup looks go trending so more ideas are seen and shared amongst each other so we can have a better chance at finding what works for us. The more ideas are shared, the more we can try different looks and products out and see what we like and don’t like and find our go-to makeup look best for our skin and lifestyle.
I love that clean girl makeup is trending because it’s something most people can recreate and it celebrates embracing and enhancing who you are and the natural features you have rather than covering it up and changing the way you look. It’s also convenient and perfect for every day which means it’ll suit anyone’s lifestyle.
This beautiful photo of @alissajanay went viral on Pinterest and many of you asked me how to recreate this look. I put together a step-by-step guide on how to create this clean girl makeup look. Let’s get into it.
Clean Girl Makeup Tutorial
I love this look. It’s so fresh and pretty and suits everyone. However, I just want to add that you could customize this look to your preferences and what suits you. For example: if you don’t want your eyebrows brushed up like in the photo or find the eyeliner too long, you can adjust this and do what you like on yourself. Remember, less is more when it comes to this look, so if you want to skip a step or two that’s perfectly fine!
Let’s get into the step-by-step guide on how to achieve the viral clean girl makeup look. Don’t forget to subscribe for more tutorials like this!
Step 1: Tinted Moisturizer, BB Cream or Light Foundation
The first step to this look is using your favourite tinted moisturizer, BB cream or foundation depending on the amount of coverage you want and your skin type. The clean girl makeup look is all about natural looking dewy, glowy skin. Honestly, I recommend just using concealer or a bb cream/tinted moisturizer wherever you want it instead of applying full coverage on your whole face.
The least amount of coverage, the better. If you are breaking out try to just cover your breakouts and not your whole face. Try to let your skin breathe and the natural beauty of your skin shine through. You don’t need to completely cover every blemish (or cover your skin at all) if you don’t want. You can even skip this step and leave your skin bare.
If your skin is dryer I suggest a BB cream. My favourite BB Cream is the Inika Organics BB Cream. If you have a skin condition or just extremely sensitive skin, I suggest your try it. It’s the only BB Cream/foundation that doesn’t make me break out.
If you need more options that can be purchased at Sephora, I suggest these:
For concealer, I suggest the Sephora Gel Serum Concealer. I have tried SO many concealers and this is the one that looks the most natural, covers dark circles well and is easy to apply and blend. You can also just use concealer wherever you need and skip the BB Cream.
If you’re prone to breakouts, I recommend the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer. It’s non-comedogenic and is always my go-to when I break out.
Step 2: Cream Blush
Next step is blush. Blush is the most important part to clean girl makeup because it gives a fresh and youthful glow to your face. It gives a natural glow that you would naturally get through the sun
You can use either a powder or cream blush.
I love this cream blush from Ilia. It’s made for even the most sensitive skin and won’t cause breakouts. It’s a natural, clean brand as well and they have many colour options available.
If you’d rather use a power blush, I recommend this one:
Step 3: Eyes
The clean girl look is all about natural eyes. As you can also see in our reference photo, her eyes look like she just applied a light brown shade to her crease, 1 or 2 shades darker than her skin tone. It’s very natural.
Apply a natural eyeshadow colour that matches your skin tone all over your lid. Then, apply an eyeshadow colour one or two shades darker to your outer crease.
I recommend the Too Faced Born This Way Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette because it has every natural skin tone shade.
Choose the shade that is 1 or 2 shades darker than your skin to put in your outer crease.
If the Too Faced palette isn’t your style or doesn’t have enough shades for you, I like the Tartelette™ Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette from Tarte that features all natural eyeshadow shades in matte.
Next: moving on the eyeliner.
In the photo we can see that she has a natural brown wing seamlessly blended into her lid. It’s a soft and sharp wing at the same time. She also lined her inner corner as well. This eyeliner technique gives the eyes a cat eye shape. If you don’t want this shape, just apply the eyeliner and skip the inner corner liner.
To apply the eyeliner, I suggest using brown eyeshadow with an angled brush because it is the easiest way to apply eyeliner as a beginner and looks the most natural. This is the technique to use to achieve the soft eyeliner she has in the photo. You don’t want a harsh line, just natural thin line that looks like your eye is shaped that way.
Guide on which colours to use with each palette
Too Faced Born This Way Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette
Fair/Light Skin Tones: Swan all over lid. Seashell in crease. Cocas as eyeliner
Medium Skin Tones: Seashell all over lid. Nude in Crease. Maple or Cocoa as eyeliner.
Deeper skin tones: Cocoa all over lid. Truffle as eyeliner
Tartelette™ Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette
Fair/Light Skin Tones: Free Spirit or Supermom all over lid. Force of Nature in Crease. Natural Beauty for liner.
Medium Skin Tones: Force of Nature all over lid. Wanderer in crease. Power Player as liner.
Deeper Skin Tones: Dreamer or Multi Tasker all over lid. Bombshell in crease. Fashionista as eyeliner.
If you want to apply eyeliner in the easiest way: use a shade of brown from the palette above to create your winged eyeliner. Use the angled brush I linked here from Sephora to apply it.
If you’d rather use eyeliner instead of the eyeshadow palette, I recommend this gel liner.
Next, apply mascara or natural false eyelashes. I suggest the Tarte Primer and Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara. If you’d rather put false lashes, either use these natural strip lashes or just apply individual lashes to the outer corner of your eye. You can skip this step if you want your makeup to look like you’re not wearing any (lashes or mascara is the biggest giveaway that you have makeup on)
I suggest these false lashes if you prefer to go with that:
Step 4: Eyebrows
Brushed up or in any way you like them. You can fill them in if you are missing hairs or leave them natural. The more natural, the better. Keep in mind, that the goal of this look isn’t to change your features, it’s to enhance them.
Step 5: Lips
Apply a little bit of lip liner that matches the colour of your lips and then clear gloss on top. Clear gloss is perfect to enhance your natural lips. This is the easiest way to achieve “clean girl” lips. Enhance your natural lips, and you are good to go! This is my favourite day to do my lips <3
If you want to go for a more natural look like the photo and keep the colour of your lips then lightly line your lips with a lip liner tha. This is my favourite way to do my lips <3
Find the lipliner that matches your lips here:
Add a clear gloss. If you want to keep things even more simple, skip the liner and only put clear gloss.
My favourite clear glosses:
Optional: Step 6: Freckles
The last step is faux freckles (or embracing your own, if you naturally have them) Now, this step is optional. If you like the look of freckles then the easiest way to create them is by taking a bobby pin and dipping it in a powder bronzer or light brown eyeshadow and applying it on your face with the bobby pin. This is the most natural way to recreate freckles in my experience.
I use the Too Faced Milk Chocolate Matter Bronzer to create faux freckles on myself. I dip a bobby pin into the bronzer and then create faux freckles wherever I want. Too Faced created 3 shades of bronzer. I have fair skin so I use the lightest shade which is the Milk Chocolate shade. If you have a medium to dark skin tone I recommend going with the Chocolate Soleil Matter Bronzer or the Dark Chocolate Matte. They are all linked here:
I hope this post helped you guys out! I tried to make it as easy as possible for you to know each step and what products to use. If you recreate this makeup look send me a photo on my socials linked below. I love seeing your recreations 🙂
Love always,
Annabel xoxo
