Press on nails have completely changed the beauty world. They are affordable, beginner-friendly, and can give you a salon-quality manicure at home in minutes. But the biggest question people ask is: how do you make press on nails last longer?
If your press ons keep popping off after a few days, don’t worry. The secret is not the nails themselves — it’s all about the prep and application method.
In this beginner guide, you’ll learn exactly how to apply press on nails so they last 1 week, plus the biggest mistakes to avoid.
Why Press On Nails Fall Off Quickly
Most press on nails only last a day or two because of:
- Skipping nail prep
- Applying nails on oily nail beds
- Using too much glue/ wrong adhesive tabs
- Choosing the wrong nail sizes
- Getting water on your nails too soon
When applied correctly, high-quality press on nails can last at least 1 week if not more.
What You Need Before Applying Press On Nails
Before you start, gather these essentials:
- Press on nail set
- Nail glue
- Nail file
- Buffer block
- Cuticle pusher
- Rubbing alcohol or acetone
- Cuticle oil (for after application)
Using the right prep products makes a huge difference in how long your manicure lasts.
How To Make Press on Nail Last 1+ Weeks
It all comes down to how the nails are prepped. This is what will make them stick better which will make them last longer along with other tips that I listed below.
Step 1: Remove Old Polish and Wash Your Hands
Start with completely clean nails.
Remove any nail polish and wash your hands with soap to remove dirt and oils. Dry your hands fully before moving on.
Avoid applying lotion before doing press on nails because oils can prevent the glue from bonding properly.
Step 2: Push Back Your Cuticles
This is one of the most important steps people skip.
Use a cuticle pusher to gently push back your cuticles. Press on nails stick best directly to the nail plate — not to skin.
If the press on overlaps your cuticle area, it will lift faster.
Step 3: Buff Your Natural Nails
Lightly buff the surface of your nails to remove shine.
This creates a rougher texture so the glue grips better.
Do not over-buff your nails. You only need to remove the natural shine.
Step 4: Clean Nails With Alcohol or Acetone
After buffing, wipe each nail with rubbing alcohol or acetone.
This removes:
- Dust
- Natural oils
- Moisture
Skipping this step is one of the main reasons press on nails fall off early.
Step 5: Choose the Correct Nail Sizes
Before gluing anything down, lay out all your press on nails and match them to each finger.
The perfect press on nail should:
- Fit sidewall to sidewall
- Not overlap onto skin
- Sit comfortably near the cuticle
If you are between sizes, choose the slightly smaller nail and file the edges if needed.
Step 6: Apply Nail Glue Correctly
This is the secret to long-lasting press ons.
Apply:
- A small layer of glue on your natural nail
- A thin layer inside the press on nail
Do not use too much glue. Excess glue creates air bubbles and weakens the hold.
If you don’t want to use glue on your nails, the best press ons with adhesive tabs are the Impress press on nails because the adhesive tab already comes stuck to the press on nail. DO NOT use press ons with seperate adhesive tabs, in my experience, they don’t stick well.

Step 7: Press and Hold for 30 Seconds
Place the press on nail slightly above the cuticle, then press downward.
Hold firmly for at least 30 seconds.
Make sure there are no air bubbles underneath the nail.
Repeat on each finger.
Step 8: Avoid Water for 1–2 Hours
Water is the enemy of fresh nail glue.
Try to avoid:
- Showering
- Washing dishes
- Swimming
for at least 1–2 hours after application.
This allows the glue to fully cure and creates a much stronger bond.
Tips to Make Press On Nails Last Longer
If you want your press ons to last 1+ weeks, follow these tips:
Wear Gloves for Cleaning
Cleaning chemicals and hot water weaken nail glue quickly.
Reapply If a Corner Lifts
Don’t rip the nail off. If you are using glue on press ons, then add a tiny drop of glue underneath and press again. If you are using Impress press ons, which stick on with an adhesive tab, then simply replace the nail with another on from the box.
Use Cuticle Oil Daily
Hydrated cuticles make your manicure look more natural and expensive.
Avoid Using Nails as Tools
Don’t use your nails to:
- Open cans
- Peel stickers
- Scratch surfaces
This prevents lifting and breakage.
Common Press On Nail Mistakes
Applying Nails Too Quickly
Proper prep matters more than speed.
Using Too Much Glue or The Wrong Adhesive Tabs
Too much glue actually weakens the hold. Applying press on nails with adhesive tasbs (stickers) will not stick on for long, UNLESS they are already stuck to the nail like Impress press on nails are made. The reason for this, is that if you apply a fake nail with a sticker to your nail that will not hold as well as glue, but the Impress press on nails are made stronger, since the adhesive tab comes already manufactured into the nail, plus use a patented technology which sticks very well.
Skipping Nail Prep
Oily nails = short-lasting press ons.
Showering Right After Application
Fresh glue needs time to harden fully.
Are Press On Nails Better Than Gel Nails or Acrylics?
In my opinion, yes
Press on nails are:
- More affordable (always a plus!)
- Easier to remove
- Less damaging than gel or acrylics which in my perspective is the best advantage and the reason I switched to press ons
- Beginner-friendly
- Faster to apply
Press on nails can look even better than gel or salon acrylics. I switched to press on nails because they are less damaging than gel or acrylics, easy to apply and remove, can be applied in 10 minutes plus the designs are stunning.
Best Types of Press On Nails for Beginners
If you’re new to press ons, start with short ones.
- Short almond nails
- Short square nails
- Neutral nude shades
- French tip press ons
These styles are easiest to apply and wear comfortably.
Learning how to apply press on nails properly makes all the difference.
With the right prep, glue technique, and aftercare, your press on nails can easily last 1 week or longer without popping off.
The key is:
- Prep thoroughly
- Remove oils completely
- Use the right amount of glue/ the right stick on press ons
- Avoid water immediately after application
Once you master the process, you can achieve salon-quality nails at home in less than 15 minutes.
My Favourite Press On Nails I’ve Worn
These are some of my favourite press on nails I’ve worn. They are all from the brands Impress or Kiss Nails. They are my favourite and in Canada are usually sold at drugstores, Walmart, or Amazon. In the United States, they are sold at more locations like, Ulta, Target, Walmart, Amazon and drugstores.
