This blog post is a guide on how to determine your body type and dress for your body type.
If you’ve ever searched “how to dress for my body type” or “what clothes suit my body shape”, you’re not alone. This is one of the most searched fashion topics because everyone wants to know how to dress their body, feel good in their skin, look stylish, and confident in their clothes.
The truth is: you just need the right clothing for your body shape. Everyone can look good, it’s not about the shape or size of your body, it’s about knowing how to dress your shape, wear clothes that flatter you and suit you.
This complete body type styling guide will help you understand your shape and learn exactly what to wear to look and feel your best.
I’m so excited to finally start this styling series as an introduction to everything I’ve learned through studying fashion styling in school and developing my love for personal style over the years.
Fashion can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially with so many trends, opinions, and “rules” online. One thing I learned during my fashion styling studies is that great style is not about changing yourself or fitting into one beauty standard — it’s about understanding your proportions, learning what flatters you naturally, and wearing clothes that make you feel confident.
I wanted to create this series to share the knowledge and styling tips I’ve learned in a way that feels realistic, approachable, and body positive. Throughout this series, I’ll be sharing how to dress different body types, styling techniques, wardrobe tips, and ways to discover and create your personal style.
I will be covering each body type in detail, so if you want to be notified when I publish each you can subscribe here to never miss a post:
All About Body Types
Your body type is mostly based on your natural bone structure, proportions, and where your body naturally carries weight or muscle. While things like workouts and lifestyle can slightly change your shape, your overall proportions are usually inherited — and that’s completely normal.
Learning your body type isn’t about changing yourself. It’s about understanding what flatters your natural shape so you can dress in a way that feels confident, balanced, and comfortable.
You may already have an idea of your body shape just by looking in the mirror, but taking measurements is the easiest and most accurate way to figure it out.
How to Measure Your Body Shape
Bust:
Measure around the fullest part of your bust while keeping the tape relaxed — not too tight.
Shoulders:
Stand naturally and wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your shoulders, slightly above your shoulder blades.
Waist:
Measure the smallest part of your waist, usually just above your belly button.
Hips:
Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips and glutes, just below your hip bones.
Once you have your measurements, you can compare your proportions to identify whether you have an hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, or inverted triangle body shape.
How to Determine Your Body Shape:
When learning about body shapes, you may notice that there are different ways to name them. Some guides use shape names like hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, or inverted triangle, while others use letter-based systems such as X, A, O, V, and H.
They’re simply different ways of describing the same body proportions.
For example:
- X Shape = Hourglass Body Type
- A Shape = Pear Body Type
- O Shape = Apple Body Type
- V Shape = Inverted Triangle Body Type
- H Shape = Rectangle Body Type
Some stylists prefer using letters because they visually resemble the body silhouette, while others use shape names because they’re easier to recognize. Neither system is “better” — they’re just different ways of naming body proportions and balance.
It’s also completely normal to relate to more than one body type. Many people are a blend of two shapes rather than fitting perfectly into just one category. For example, someone might mostly have a pear shape with slight hourglass proportions, or a rectangle shape with broader shoulders similar to an inverted triangle.
Body shapes exist on a spectrum, and every body is unique. These categories are simply styling tools meant to help you understand what clothing silhouettes you may feel best in — not rules you have to follow.
The goal of dressing for your body type is never to “fix” your body. It’s about finding pieces that make you feel confident, comfortable, and aligned with your personal style.
In this guide I will include both name and letter references. You can use whichever resonates more with you.
- Hourglass / X Shape: Curves in all the right places. The bust and hips are roughly the same width, with a well-defined, narrower waist.
- Pear /A Shape: Hips are wider than the bust and shoulders, often accompanied by a clearly defined waist.
- Apple / O Shape: Carries more volume around the midsection, with a fuller bust and narrower hips or shoulders.
- Inverted Triangle / V Shape: Shoulders or bust are broader than the hips. Often paired with a straight or undefined waist.
- Rectangle / H Shape: Bust, waist, and hips are fairly uniform, creating a straight silhouette with minimal curves
