If you want to learn how to create a mood board, this post is for you! Mood boards are so fun to create and can take inspiration from 0 to 100! I love creating mood boards to express my ideas and to look at and gain inspiration when I need it.
What is a mood board?
A mood board, also known as a vision board is a collection of ideas through photos, text, samples, fabrics etc… put together to create a certain feel or vibe. It conveys a certain feeling, vibe, style or idea that you want to express.
A mood board can feature images, fabrics, jewelry, objects, text or anything that inspires you and will help convey the feeling you want to express.
My mood board experience
I’ve been creating mood boards since I can remember. I was always very creative and would create mood boards to express ideas I would come up with. Because of my creative background I went to fashion school where I learned lots of creative practices and learned more about creating mood boards. I got my diploma as a fashion stylist and had to make mood boards to convey the creative concepts I came up with.
In this post I am sharing what I learned through years of creating mood boards to help you get your creativity flowing.
You can create a physical or virtual mood board. Today I will show you how to create both.
How to create a physical mood board:
To create a physical mood board you can use a poster, notebook, sketchbook or piece of paper (whatever you prefer). I have a sketchbook that I create my mood boards in (see my sketchbook below) In my opinion, sketchbooks are the best for creating mood boards because the paper is thicker.
I suggest getting a sketchbook you love and create all your mood boards in their whenever you feel inspired.
Here are some of my mood boards I’ve created:

Physical mood boards are great because you can hang them up or put them somewhere you can see everyday. You can touch and really feel the photos and vibe of the board. It’s easy to add to them whenever you find something you want to add
Check out these sketchbooks to make your own mood board journal. These are the ones I love and use.
What to add to your board?
Now you might be wondering how to create your actual mood board and what to add to it to make it come alive. You can add anything that inspires you from photos, pieces of articles, words, jewellery, flowers, wrapping etc… Anything you have that you can stick to your piece of paper or notebook, you can add to your mood board.
To get ideas and have a lots of things to add to your mod board I suggest getting a magazine and start cutting out images or words that inspire you and stick it to your board.
This is the easiest and fastest way to create a mood board right now in your room!
How to create a virtual mood board:
The other way to create a mood board is to create a virtual one. Virtual mood boards can be done anywhere even if you have no access to scissors, magazines or paper. It’s convenient that you can have access to your mood board on any device no matter where you are, but because it’s virtual you can’t add special mementos/items or anything other than photos or text to your mood board.
There are many platforms available to create your virtual mood board. Let’s get into the different options…
Virtual mood board options
Canva (canva.com) is an online graphic design website where you can create any image you need online for free. It’s very easy to use and you can easily upload photos to your Canva account and add them to one page. There are tons of templates and graphic elements to use. You can add text to your images easily too. You can then print the page or save it to your computer or phone.
2. We Heart It
We Heart It (weheartit.com) is a platform very similar to Pinterest. It is a positive platform created to gain inspiration. You can easily create collections (like boards on Pinterest) and add images that inspire you to them. What better platform to use than one literally designed to spread inspiration.

3. Pinterest
Pinterest (pinterest.com) is the ultimate inspiration platform haha. You can find anything you want or need on Pinterest and search through the millions of photos and videos to find the inspiration you are looking for. Add these images to your boards and voila, you made your mood board. Your Pinterest board is essentially your mood board.

4. Instagram
Instagram is another option for creating a mood board virtually. Create an account just for your mood boards and upload images you love to create the vibe and feeling you want to express. You can keep this account public or private depending if you want to share your mood boards with the world or not.
My Instagram for this blog is a mood board in itself. I upload beautiful images I love that convey the feeling and style I want to share with you all. I share tips, quotes and information but always make sure to post a photo that goes with the vibe I want to express.
5. Pages, Word or Powerpoint
If you’d rather create your virtual mood board without needing Internet you can use Pages on Mac, Word Documents or Powerpoint. Add your images and text and then save it to your computer or print it out.
What is the most important part to creating a mood board?
The most important part to creating a mood board is simply creating it. It doesn’t matter how you create it, whether that is on a piece of paper, using a notebook or making a virtual one. It doesn’t matter whether you use Instagram or Word or a sketchbook you’ve had since 2010. As long as you just create and get your ideas out of your head and onto something, that is all that matters.
Just create the mood board. It doesn’t matter how or why or when. Creativity is a gift and a portal to your soul. You should use it. Always get your creativity flowing and remember that it doesn’t matter how or the details on what you use or what you have, the only thing that matters is getting your ideas flowing from your heart and into a form you can see.
Love always,
Annabel xoxo
